Research Overview
In its recent report on SDGs (2022), the United Nations issued a code red warning to humanity, stating that the world is on the brink of catastrophe due to climate change and that its impact extends to all SDGs. SDG 13 calls for urgent measures to address climate change and its impacts, and the Paris Agreement (PA) set specific goals to avoid the worst effects of climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a United Nations organization that conducts scientific assessments of climate change, stated in its Sixth Assessment Report that anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions may peak by 2025, but must be reduced by almost half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.
Against this background, this project will investigate and analyze the challenges and responses of Northeast Asian countries towards achieving the PA goals and SDGs. It will also propose policies and actions for cooperation between countries and regions, including Niigata, to achieve common goals.
