Research Overview
Background and Purpose
Many studies examine the domestic promotion of SDGs and the activities of national and local governments in Japan, while some studies link international cooperation and SDGs. These studies include “Japan’s International Cooperation in the Era of the Global South and SDGs,” a research paper written by Kiyoshi Matsushita, and a magazine titled “Asian and African studies” 61(3)=441:2021 p.1-5. Also, “Japan’s International Cooperation in Asia – From Economic Growth to the Realization of a Sustainable Society” edited by Yasuhiro Shigeta, Kazuhiro Ota, Koji Fukushima, and Kazuko Fujita (Minerva Shobo, 2021) is a book that summarizes Japan’s international cooperation in Asia, including Northeast Asia. This book provides detailed and very useful information on support for South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Mongolia. The era of horizontal cooperation between Japan and other Northeast Asian countries has arrived. However, how Japan should address this new era and address international cooperation to realize SDGs in Northeast Asia are only mentioned as a future issue. No research yet exists that discusses how to improve the situation in this region through mutual cooperation among Northeast Asian countries.
This research will (1) establish what kind of projects are possible as international cooperation for realizing SDGs in Northeast Asia, and (2) build a foundation for joint research where researchers from all countries in Northeast Asia (Japan, China, South Korea, Mongolia, Russia, and North Korea) can discuss Northeast Asian issues.
